What Are Service Opportunities in AA?

Service is a core part of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous. It is how members give back, stay connected, and help carry the message to others. Service can happen at every level, from making coffee at a meeting to helping shape AA’s future through trusted roles.

Group-Level Service

  • Greeters, Chairpersons, and Coffee Makers: These roles help meetings run smoothly and feel welcoming.
  • Literature and Chips Coordinators: Keep recovery materials and tokens available.
  • General Service Representatives (GSRs): Represent the group at district meetings and keep members informed about AA as a whole.

District and Area Service

  • District Committee Members (DCMs): Connect groups to the area and help coordinate service efforts.
  • Committee Work: Join teams focused on public information, corrections, treatment facilities, accessibility, or archives.
  • Event Planning: Help organize workshops, speaker meetings, or service conferences.

Beyond the Area

  • Regional and National Service: Opportunities include attending regional forums or participating in service at the General Service Office (GSO).
  • Writing and Sharing Experience: Contribute stories to AA literature or Grapevine magazine.

Why Get Involved?

Service strengthens sobriety, builds community, and ensures AA is there for the next person who needs help. It’s a way to turn gratitude into action—there is a role for everyone, no matter your experience level.
